Freedom of Conscience in Central Europe: Germany, Czech Republic, Poland is a cultural tour through major Central European cities—Berlin, Munich, Prague, and Krakow. The journey explores themes of political courage and moral conviction by engaging with figures like Václav Havel, Martin Luther, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Participants will visit key historical and cultural landmarks, including the Berlin Wall, Munich’s medieval castles and cathedrals, Prague’s Old Town, and historic Krakow. Students will deepen their understanding of how these conflicts shaped modern European and Western politics and society.

On this trip, students will:

  1. Gain a more profound appreciation for the lives and contributions of several major
European dissenters and resistance movements, including Martin Luther, Dietrich
Bonhoeffer, Vaclav Havel, and the White Rose student resistance movement.
  2. Gain a deeper and more nuanced perspective on the risks, challenges, and value of
free speech and political dissent, thus improving their own capacity for good citizenship.
