ABOUT US/SOBRE NOSOTROS

Background

In 2015, Dr. Daniel Price started the Initiative after his close work with the community and after noticing community members' lack of trust in the health care system. The Community Health Workers Initiative has taken the lead in building community capacity through trust and advocacy as a network of community health workers, undergraduates, faculty, and staff.

Initiative Overview

  • The Training Center within the Community Health Workers Initiative (CHWI) is approved by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) to provide the 160-hour certification course required to be certified as CHW in the State of Texas.
  • The 91破解版 CHW Training Center is also approved to provide continuing education hours toward the renewal for CHW and CHW Instructors. Spanish continuing education hours are also available. 
  • By Summer 2022, the CHW Training Center will have over 405 certified new CHWs since beginning in 2018.

  • El Centro de Capacitaci贸n dentro de la Iniciativa de Trabajadores de Salud Comunitarios (CHWI) est谩 aprobado por el Departamento Estatal de Servicios de Salud de Texas (DSHS) para brindar el curso de certificaci贸n de 160 horas requerido para obtener la certificaci贸n como CHW en el Estado de Texas.
  • El Centro de capacitaci贸n de CHW de la Universidad de Houston tambi茅n est谩 aprobado para proporcionar horas de educaci贸n continua hacia la renovaci贸n de CHW e instructores de CHW. Las horas de educaci贸n continua en espa帽ol tambi茅n est谩n disponibles.

ABOUT OUR CHW COURSE

The 91破解版 Community Health Workers Initiative offers a 160-hour Community Health Worker (CHW) training course. The Texas State Department of Health and Human Services (DSHS) has approved our training program. During our course, all CHW students work together on developing projects that focus on a specific health issue that targets community members in the Greater Houston area.

Our CHW training course is offered spring, summer, and fall semesters.

 ACERCA DE NUESTRO CURSO DE PROMOTORES

La Iniciativa de Promotores de Salud de la Universidad de Houston ofrece un curso de capacitaci贸n para Promotores de Salud (CHW por sus siglas en ingl茅s) de 160 horas. Nuestro programa de capacitaci贸n ha sido aprobado por el Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos del Estado de Texas (DSHS por sus siglas en ingl茅s). Durante nuestro curso, todos los estudiantes trabajan juntos en el desarrollo de un proyecto que se enfocan en un problema de salud espec铆fico dirigido a los miembros de la comunidad en el 谩rea metropolitana de Houston.
 
Nuestro curso de capacitaci贸n se ofrece en los semestres de primavera, verano y oto帽o.

Core CHW Training

  • 160-hour interactive course.

  • Focused on the eight core competencies for CHWs.

  • Learn about logic models, non-medical drivers of health, motivational interviewing, program evaluation, and other community health topics.

The course is $750 in total, but partial and full tuition waivers are available for -Main Campus undergraduate students and community members from targeted communities where we have received funding.   • Centrado en las ocho competencias b谩sicas para promotores.

  • Aprenda sobre modelos l贸gicos, determinantes sociales de la salud, entrevistas motivacionales, evaluaci贸n de programas y otros temas de salud comunitarios.

How long is this course?
The course lasts for an entire academic semester, 16 weeks total.

Will I have to do work outside of class lecture time?
Yes! After each class, you will have about 2-6 hours of homework and will need to work on your group project. All of the time that you spend inside and outside class will add up to the 160 hours required by the for certification.

隆S铆! Despu茅s de cada clase, tendr谩 aproximadamente 2-6 horas de tarea y deber谩 trabajar en su proyecto grupal. Todo el tiempo que pase dentro y fuera de la clase se sumar谩 a las 160 horas requeridas por para la certificaci贸n.

Will I need to renew my license?
Yes. CHW's are required to obtain 20 hours of continuing education units to maintain their CHW license. More information about requirements can be found on the . As a training center, we also offer CEU's to help you maintain your license.

We are thrilled to announce that this past fall, we celebrated the graduation of 73 new CHW students. We acknowledge their hard work and dedication, and we wish them success in their new careers. Our graduates have proven themselves in our three our on-site locations: CFC,  Oxford Place, Sunnyside, and our online platform!

We also would like to thank four commencement speaker Dr. Luis D. Medina. Dr Medina is a licensed clinical psychologist and cultural neuropsychologist. He received his B.A. in psychology from Yale University and Ph.D. in clinical psychology/neuropsychology from the San Diego State University/University of California San Diego Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology. Dr. Medina completed his clinical internship at the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Medical Center (geropsychology track) followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in adult clinical neuropsychology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. His research examines the cultural neuroscience of cognitive aging, particularly in the context of Alzheimer鈥檚 disease and related dementias (ADRD), as well as the clinical assessment and diagnosis of ADRD in historically underrepresented populations.
