IPhO Receives National 鈥淏est Practice鈥� Recognition for Community Service
September 24 鈥� The COP chapter of the Industry Pharmacists Organization (IPhO) received national recognition for a community service/philanthropy "best practice" at IPhO's virtual Annual Meeting Sept. 4-7.
In March of this year, The COP IPhO chapter partnered with the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), formerly known as Be The Match, to host an education and outreach event at 鈥檚 Student Center. IPhO members encouraged students, faculty and staff to join the bone marrow donor registry and learn more about blood diseases, NMDP and the match process.
鈥淚 believe this activity stood out nationally because this type of drive is not something people immediately think about when they want to volunteer, and many people are not aware of just how many people are in need of a match,鈥� said Pharm.D. student Danielle Cortez, 2025-26 chapter president.
According to the NMDP website, over 70 diseases can be cured or treated by a blood stem cell transplant. Through allogeneic transplant, a patient鈥檚 diseased cells are replaced with healthy cells from a donor. Even though tissue type is inherited, only 30% of patients will have a relative who matches and is able to donate. The other 70%, or approximately 12,000 people, are waiting for a match.
